Jean-Michel Othoniel
Born in 1964 in Saint-Etienne, Jean-Michel Othoniel studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Arts, Cergy-Pontoise, and is currently based in Paris. Since receiving international recognition for his sculptures made of wax and sulfur at documenta IX in 1992, Othoniel has broadened the scope of his practice by experimenting with a range of mediums, from sculpture to installation. In 2005, the artist showcased Le Bateau de larmes (Boat of Tears) (2004), which explored the Cuban refugees‘ struggle for freedom, at the Unlimited section of Art Basel. In 2011, his major retrospective My Way was held at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and traveled to venues across the globe including PLATEAU, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul. Othoniel has also participated in a diverse range of public projects; in 2000, he received his first public commission to install Le Kiosque des Noctambules (The Kiosk of the Nightwalkers) at the entrance of the Parisian subway station Palais Royal–Musee du Louvre in celebration of the centenary of the Paris metro. His works can be found in many significant collections around the world, including the Centre Pompidou and Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris; Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice; Museum of Modern Art and Brooklyn Museum, New York; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; Budi Tek-Yuz Museum, Shanghai; and the Louvre Museum, Paris. 장-미셸 오토니엘은 1964년 프랑스의 중동부 생테티엔 (St. Étienne) 태생으로 어려서부터 예술가 집안에서 자라나 일찍이 예술가의 길을 걷기 시작하였으며 1989년 프랑스 파리- 세르지 고등미술학교를 졸업하였다. 1985년부터 조각과 설치, 미디어 작품으로 꾸준히 전시 활동을 하였으며, 유황을 소재로 한 조각작품으로 1992년 독일의 카셀 도큐멘타에 참가하며 이름을 알리기 시작하였다. 1990년대 초반 이탈리아에서 수준 높은 유리 가공 기술을 접한 이후 유리를 이용한 작업에 관심을 갖기 시작하였고, 1990년대 후반부터 유리로 목걸이를 만드는 독창적인 작업을 본격적으로 진행해왔다. 1980년대 후반부터는 사진, 조각, 설치 등 다양한 장르를 넘나들며 존재의 상실과 부재, 그리고 인간이 지니는 상처들을 주제로 다루어 왔다. 그는 주로 유황, 왁스, 인과 같은 화려한 외형과 반대되는 독특하고 역설적인 성질을 지닌 재료들을 작품에 활용해왔으며 1992년부터 본격적으로 유리를 주요 매체로 작업하기 시작하였다. 2011년 첫 회고전으로 파리 퐁피두 센터에서 열린 《My Way》전을 시작하여 서울 삼성미술관 플라토와 일본 하라 현대미술관, 이어 마카오와 뉴욕에서 순회전을 가졌다.
