Chung Sang-Hwa (b.1932)
Repetition and process are central themes to the meditative, monochrome works of Chung Sang-Hwa (b.1932). Like several artists of the Dansaekwha, Chung studied at the prestigious Seoul National University before moving to Paris and Japan. Chung returned to Korea only to further immerse himself in a specifically Korean tradition, drawing on nature, classical Korean art literature and culture. Chung distilled these ideas along with his Western influences into the uniquely Korean manner of monochrome art. Along with his fellow Dansaekwha artists, his work began to focus on the transcendental through his use of application and removal, the void in the work and the full. Through his repetitive actions, he strives to achieve unity of his process with the materials and the art, thus imbuing the work with his spirit of purpose. His application and removal of paints onto a checkered grid is rigorous and purposeful resulting in a layered canvas of singular color and multitude of forms.
반복과 과정은 정상화(b.1932)의 명상적인 단색화의 중심 주제이다. 단색화 계열의 여타 작가들처럼, 정상화는 파리와 일본으로 이주하기 전까지 서울대학교에서 일류교육을 수학했다. 그가 추후 한국으로 귀국한 것은 오직 한국의 자연, 한국고전예술문학, 한국문화 등 한국의 전통에 보다 더 몰두하기 위함이었다. 정상화는 이런 것들을 그가 받은 서구의 영향과 단색화가 가진 독보적인 한국적 특색과 함께 증류시켰다. 그의 동료 단색화 작가들과 유사하게 그의 작품은 재료를 바르고 다시 제거하는 방법을 통하여, 곧 작업의 공백과 채움을 통하여 초월적인 것을 추구하기 시작했다. 이러한 반복적인 행동을 통해 그가 바란 것은 재료와 예술과 함께 작업의 과정이 합일을 이뤄내는 것이었으며, 결국 그의 정신이 추구하는 목적으
로 작업이 온전히 채워지는 일이다. 그가 바둑판 무늬 격자에 페인트를 칠하고 제거하는 행동은 엄격하고도 확고한 목적을 수반하는 것이며, 이는 곧 여러 겹으로 형성된 갖가지 형태의 단색 회화작업의 결과물로 이어진다. 정상화의 작품은 2011년 프랑스 Saint-Etienne Metropole 미술관과 2008년 폴란드 Poznan Mediations Biennale를 비롯하여 국내외 여러 유수기관에서 널리 전시된 바 있다.
