Haegue Yang
Haegue Yang (b. 1971, South Korea) lives and works in Berlin, Germany and Seoul, South Korea. Yang’s practice spans a wide range of media, from paper collage to performative sculpture and large-scale multi-sensorial installation, often featuring everyday objects, in addition to labor-intensive woven sculptures. She is currently a professor of Fine Arts at Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, where she received her Meisterschüler. In 2018, she became the first-ever Asian female artist to receive the prestigious Wolfgang Hahn Prize and was awarded the Republic of Korea Culture and Arts Award (Presidential Citation) in the visual arts category. She has also received the 13th Benesse Prize in the 2022 Singapore Biennale. Articulated in her abstract visual vocabulary, Yang’s anthropomorphic sculptures often play with the notion of ‘the folk’ being a cultural idea, while also attempting to transcend it as being a mere tradition of specific cultures. Her multisensory environments suggest uncontrollable and fleeting connotations of time, place, figures, and experiences that connect us in this non-sharable field of perception. Yang recently opened a successful solo exhibition, Haegue Yang: Lost Lands and Sunken Fields, at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas, USA which is on view until April 27. In March, her touring exhibition Haegue Yang: Leap Year will open at Kunsthal Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
양혜규는 1971년 서울에서 태어나 현재 베를린과 서울을 오가며 작업하고 있다. 다양한 작품과 왕성한 전시로 동시대 작가들 중 단연 돋보이는 행보를 보여온 그는 1994년 독일로 이주하여 프랑크푸르트 국립미술학교 슈테델슐레Städelschule에서 마이스터슐러 학위를 취득하였고, 현재 모교에서 교수로 재직 중이다. 2018년 볼프강 한 미술상을 수상했고, 같은 해 10월 문화체육관광부가 수여하는 대한민국문화예술상(대통령 표창) 미술 부문 수상자로 선정되었으며, 2022년 싱가포르 비엔날레가 주최하는 제13회 베네세 상을 수상했다. 작가는 특정한 역사적 인물이나 구체적인 일상의 환경 등을 설치, 조각, 영상, 사진 등 다양한 매체를 아우르는 정교하면서도 추상적인 조형 언어로 번역해낸다. 그의 작업은 변형된 것들, 일상에 잠재되어 있는 이질성의 의미망을 발굴해낸다. 이미 존재하는 문화사회적 체계를 교란시킴으로써 미술의 비전형적인 해석을 도모하고, 인간 삶의 조건과 정치성의 문제에 주목한다. 양혜규는 미국 댈러스 내셔 조각 센터(Nasher Sculpture Center)에서 개인전 《양혜규: 사라진 땅과 침몰한 세상》을 성황리에 개최했으며, 전시는 4월 27일까지 진행된다. 3월에는 네덜란드의 쿤스트할 로테르담(Kunsthal Rotterdam)에서 순회전 《양혜규: 윤년》도 앞두고 있다.
