Ugo Rondinone
우고 론디노네는 1964년 스위스 브룬넨에서 태어났으며, 현재 뉴욕에서 거주 및 활동 중이다. 그는 오늘날 세계 현대미술을 주도하는 작가 중 한 명으로, 그의 조각, 회화, 드로잉, 장소특정적 설치 작업은 광범위한 재료와 개념적 어휘들을 포괄하면서도 그가 태생적으로 가진 깊은 인간애와 결부된 섬세한 시각 언어, 재치와 관용을 담은 철학과 절묘하고도 조화롭게 연결된다. 특히 태양, 달, 무지개, 나무, 돌 등을 소재로 삼은 대표작에서 드러나듯 자연에 대한 면밀한 관찰은 작업 전반의 주요 맥락을 형성하며 이에 대비되는 창, 문, 벽 등 고립과 은둔을 은유하는 구조물 형태의 작업은 인간 내면의 세계에 대한 탐구를 담는다. 특히 뉴욕 록펠러 광장에서 선보인 아홉 개의 거대한 청석 조각 작품 <human nature>(2013), 네바다 사막에 색색의 바위로 만든 일곱 개의 탑을 설치한 <seven magic mountains>(2016), 프랑스 베르사유 정원에서 처음 선보인 <the sun>(2017-2018) 등 다양한 대형 공공미술 프로젝트와 장소특정적 설치 작업을 통해 보다 넓은 층의 관객에게 영감을 선사해왔다.
Ugo Rondinone (b.1964) was born in Brunnen, Switzerland and currently lives and works in New York. He is one of the most acclaimed international contemporary artists of his generation. His sculptures, paintings, drawings, and site-speci¬fic installations span a tremendous range of materials and conceptual vocabularies, yet they are all joined by his remarkable balance of wit, lyricism, and generosity coupled with a deep commitment to humanity. Over the past two decades, he has created a strikingly diverse body of work that confronts and celebrates the passage of time, the beauty and vulnerability of nature, and the humor that resides in everyday love and loss. This dynamic can be seen in the way his work moves between observing nature and his interest in observing an inner world using metaphors of seclusion and isolation. Merging this poetic sensibility with material innovation and ingenuity, his work has been seen in celebrated exhibitions around the world including critically acclaimed site specific exhibitions that have inspired countless visitors including human nature at Rockefeller Plaza in New York where he showed nine massive bluestone sculptures (2013); seven magic mountains, a public art project comprised of seven towers of colorful boulders at a desert in Nevada (2016); and the Gardens of Versailles in France where he first exhibited the sun (2017-2018).
