Kibong Rhee
Kibong Rhee’s work is characterized by a sublime visual vocabulary and refined sense of detail coupled with an inventive use of materials. Inspired by questions of flux and impermanence, his paintings and sculptures explore the conceptual meaning and mechanics of change. Rhee frequently employs the theme of impermanence – a physical process found in nature that arouses a sense of beauty, desire, and nostalgia. Rhee’s work focuses on the point where physical phenomenology can elicit a transcendental experience. Especially fascinated by the many manifestations of water, Rhee’s poetic tableaux evoke a rare balance of sensuality and meditative distance. In this way, Rhee begins a new dialogue in his works through structural changes, creating an introspective space where the context of meaning disappears and abstractness is emphasized.
이기봉은 일관되게 인간과 사물, 세계의 본질을 이루는 구조와 흐름에 대해 관심을 가져왔다. 작가는 이를 기본적으로 생성과 소멸, 순환의 구조로 보고, 그 흐름 속에서 파생되는 의미와 역학구조를 파고든다. 순환 구조에 기인한 ‘사라짐’이라는 주제는 하나의 필연적인 물리적 현상인 동시에 아름다움과 욕망, 향수 등의 감정을 불러일으키기도 한다. 캔버스와 플렉시글라스, 또는 반투명한 천에 그려진 이미지들은 단수의 시점에서는 양립할 수 없는 두 개의 세계가 복수의 층위 구조에서 공존하고 있다. 이처럼 그는 작품 내부의 역학구조를 통해 작품과의 대화를 시도함으로써 의미의 맥락이 사라지고 추상성이 강조되는 내면의 공간을 만들어낸다.
