Sungsic Moon
평범한 일상사를 세필로 표현하는 문성식의 작업은 우리가 무심히 지나치는 보편적 풍경에 개인적 감각과 감성을 부여한다. 태생적으로 인간사와 주변 만물을 연민의 시선으로 들여다보는 작가는 과슈, 유화물감, 젯소, 연필 등 다양한 매체를 활용한 연작들을 통해 근원적인 ‘끌림’에 대해 이야기 한다. 특히 세필로 그려진 아크릴 작품들은 세세한 부분까지 표현되어, 아무리 사소해 보이는 것일지라도 동일한 관심으로 사물을 바라보는 그의 태도를 보여준다. 또한 작가는 회화 뿐만 아니라 드로잉에도 많은 관심을 기울여 작업을 진행해 왔는데, 그의 드로잉은 회화작품처럼 자세한 필치로 이루어져 있지만 동시에 연필의 흑색으로 인해 매우 동양화적인 느낌을 준다. 작가는 늘 스스로에게 ‘아시아의 옛 그림들이 현대화 된다면, 과연 어떤 모습일까?’라는 질문을 던지며 동양적인 것과 현대적인 것을 잇는 독창적 방법론을 갈구한다. 이는 결국 동서고금을 막론하여 다양한 출처의 양식을 참고하고, 회화와 드로잉 장르의 경계에 도전하여 새로운 화면을 찾기 위한 노력의 일환으로 이어진다.
In all of Sungsic Moon (b.1980, Korean)’s works, the depiction of ordinary everyday life as framed by nature and landscape is expressed in striking detail with the fine line of pencil or brush. By using a range of mediums such as gouache, oil paint, gesso, and pencil, Moon’s works explore his interest in the subject of “attraction” with the artist’s own personal sensibilities. Moon questions how Asian painting idioms and philosophy have been ruptured by colonial history, and how the unique methods that connect these thoughts can be reanimated in today’s Korea. For the artist, contemporary Korea embodies a unique place of cultural hybridity and Moon’s approach to drawing powerfully illustrates this aesthetic, balancing different modes and historical traditions, while challenging the strict classification of drawing versus painting. In this way, the artist has created an innovative style characterized by compositions that capture both the immediacy of the artistic gesture with the depth and emotional resonance of traditional painting, heralding his effort to create a new kind of pictorial narrative.
