김수자는 9월 3일부터 10월 23일까지 일본 나라현에서 열리는 <나라 프로젝트>에 참가한다. 이 프로젝트는 일본·중국·한국의 3개국에서 문화적인 발전을 지향하는 한 개의 도시를 선정하여 각 도시가 행하는 다양한 문화 프로그램을 통해 서로의 교류를 돈독히 다져가는 국가 프로젝트인 <동아시아문화도시>의 일환으로 개최되며, 올해는 일본의 나라를 비롯하여 중국의 닝보시, 한국의 제주특별시가 진행한다. 김수자의 작품이 설치되는 나라현의 간고사는 6세기 아스카에 세워진 일본에서 가장 오래된 최초의 사찰이자 당시 백제에서 건너온 승려들과 장인들이 지은 호코사를 전신으로 하며, 이후 8세기경에 현재의 위치로 신축 이전되어 나라시대에는 대사찰의 역할을 유서 깊은 명승이다. 동양의 음양 사상을 바탕으로 하는 작품을 다뤄온 김수자는 이곳의 돌무대에서 검은 오브제와 모든 것을 반사하는 유리면이 특징인 장소특정적인 설치작품을, 쇼시보우의 좌실에서는 영상 작품을 소개하며 간고사의 오랜 ‘시간’은 물론 장소가 가진 특별한 역사적인 맥락을 담아낼 예정이다.

Kimsooja will participate in Nara Project, which takes place in Nara Prefecture from September 3 to October 23. This project is part of a tri-national event initiated by the Culture City of East Asia to promote and foster cultural exchange between Korea, China, and Japan. Each nation selects one city which will showcase its cultural development through various programs. In addition to the program in Nara, Japan, Ningo city, China and Jeju city, Korea will each host a project this year. Kimsooja’s work will be installed in Gangoji Temple, a historically significant Buddhist temple from the Nara Period built by Buddhist monks and master craftsmen dispatched from Korea. Gangoji Temple is also the oldest temple in Japan. Formerly known as Hôkôji Temple upon its completion during the 6th century Asuka Period, it was renamed Gangoji Temple upon its relocation to the new capital in present-day Nara. In this space, Kimsooja, who primarily explores Eastern yin and yang philosophy, will present a location-specific installation that includes reflective glass surfaces and black objects on an Ishibutai (a stone stage) and a video piece in the sitting room of Shoshibo (a prefectural designated cultural asset) to investigate the concept of “time,” relating to Gangoji Temple’s long history and intercultural context.
