‘바늘여인’, ‘보따리’, ‘천·지·인’ 등 관계항의 탐구로 널리 알려진 작가 김수자는 오늘 6월부터 이탈리아 베네치아에서 열리는 제 55회 베니스비엔날레 한국관 대표작가로 선정되어 단독 참가한다. 이미 1999년과 2005년에 베니스비엔날레 본 전시에 참여해 세계 미술계의 주목을 받은 바 있지만, 이번에는 한국관 대표작가로 첫 참가여서 그 의미가 깊다. 이번 제 55회 베니스 비엔날레 총감독은 2010년 제 8회 광주 비엔날레 총감독을 역임했던 마시밀리아노 지오니(Massimiliano Gioni)가 맡았으며, 한국관 커미셔너는 프랑스 아트센터 르 콘소시움 디렉터인 김승덕씨가 맡았다. 올해 베니스 비엔날레는 <The Encyclopedic Palace>를 주제로 오는 6월 1일부터 11월 말까지 열린다.

Kukje Gallery is pleased to announce that Kimsooja has been nominated to hold a solo exhibition at the Korean Pavilion of the 55th Venice Biennale from June. Kimsooja is an internationally acclaimed artist well known for investigating metaphysical themes of consciousness and social identity through her recurring subjects of the ‘needle woman’ and ‘bottari.’ She has previously participated in the Venice Biennale in 1999 and 2005, but this will be her first time to hold a solo exhibition at the Korean Pavilion. The 55th Venice Biennale is directed by Massimiliano Gioni, who curated the 8th Gwangju Biennale in 2010. The commissioner of the Korean Pavilion is Seung-duk Kim, the director of Le Corsortium in Dijon, France. Titled as The Encyclopedic Palace, this year’s Venice Biennale will be held from June 1 to November 24.
