김수자 작가는 지난 2010년 오바마 정부의 예술정책 지원책의 일환으로 미국 연방 총무청(GSA) 아트인아키텍쳐 프로그램으로부터 영구설치 작업의뢰를 받아 새로 확장 건설된 아리조나의 멕시코 국경지역인 노갈레스에 위치한 마리포사(Mariposa Port of Entry) 육로 입국장에 명상적이고도 명징한 해석이 돋보이는 장소 특정적 작업을 제작하여 최근 공식적으로 영구설치하였다. 마리포사 입국장은 미국 내에서도 가장 붐비는 육로 입국장 중 하나로, 멕시코에서 미국으로 유통되는 농산품의 주요 통관 장소이며 이 곳을 통해 국경을 넘나드는 이들은 매년 2천 3백만명에 육박하며 이는 JFK 공항보다 많은 물량을 소화하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 작가는 바로 이 국경선에 위치한 미국 영토로 통하는 첫 번째 보행 입국장의 회전문 위에 대형 LED스크린을 설치하였다. 이 비디오 스크린은 국경의 장소성을 인식시키는 것은 물론 다각적인 경계선의 개념을 강조시키며 마리포사라는 특정 장소와 지역을 위해 특별히 제작된 영상 신작을 보여준다.
Kukje Gallery is pleased to announce Kimsooja’s new project for the Mariposa Port of Entry. Commissioned through the Art in Architecture Program of the U.S. General Services Administration in 2010, Kimsooja has created a poignant site-specific artwork for the Mariposa Land Port of Entry. One of the busiest land ports in the United States, Mariposa serves as the main port of entry for fresh produce entering the United States from Mexico and facilitates over 23 million visitor border crossings every year. On this border, Kimsooja has installed a large LED screen directly on the borderline, above the revolving door at the first pedestrian entry to US territory. Both marking the site and emphasizing the concept of borderlines, the screen plays a new video work created especially for this specific location and community.
