제 1회 CCA 비엔날레는 2014 <친밀한 우주론: 나노 기술 시대에 있어서의 스케일의 미학>의 일환으로 김수자와 코넬 대학교의 Wiesner 나노 연구소의 협업으로 진행된 공동 프로젝트이다. 60년대에 한스하커, 데니스 오펜하임, 골든 메타클라크 등의 새로운 실험적 설치작업들을 잉태하며 미국의 실험미술을 주도했던 코넬대학에서 주관한 이번 야외 설치 조각은 김수자만의 고유한 바늘형상의 파빌리온으로 제작되었다. 이 작품을 통해 김수자는 우주 규모에서 거리와 시간 사이를 바느질 하는 바늘 끝의 개념을 탐구한다.
As part of the 2014 CCA biennale, Korean-born conceptual multi-media artist, Kimsooja has created a new work in close collaboration with architect Jaeho Chong and the Wiesner Nanomaterials Lab at Cornell University. Kimsooja explores the notion of the needlepoint as an intersection between distance and memory threading across a cosmic scale. A Needle Woman: Galaxy was a Memory, Earth is a Souvenir is a 46 foot high, 4.5 foot diameter needle-shaped steel structure made for an intimate exterior and interior experience.
