정연두는 10월 24일부터 2016년 3월 6일까지 프랑스 발드마른 현대미술관Musée d'Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne (이하 MAC/VAL)에서 개인전을 개최한다. 이번 전시에는 작가가 지난 여름 MAC/VAL의 레지던시 프로그램에 참여하여 제작한 신작 D'ici et d'ailleurs (Here in Elsewhere) 시리즈를 선보일 예정이다. 이 작품은 작가가 프랑스에서 만난 이주민들의 삶에 대한 이야기를 바탕으로 진행한 30개의 인터뷰 중8명의 것을 선정하여 11겹의 입체적 사진작업으로 구성한 작품이다. 각 작품에는 소형 스피커가 장착되어 관람객들은 사진을 보는 것과 동시에 그들의 인터뷰를 직접 들을 수 있다. 정연두는 구조적으로 구축한 작품을 통해 ‘이곳과 저곳 사이’의 경계에 놓인 개인의 이야기를 역사적 맥락과 인간의 존엄성으로 확장하여 관객에게 깊이 있는 메시지를 전달한다.
Yeondoo Jung is presenting his solo exhibition D'ici et d'ailleurs at Musée d'art contemporain du Val de Marne in Paris from October 24 to March 6, 2016. The artist will feature new work series titled D'ici et d'ailleurs (Here in Elsewhere), which he made in a residency program last July and August. He selected 8 out of his 30 interviews on immigrants he met during the residency and produced each work composed of 11 different layers of photographic images that create depth and dimension in a flat two-dimensional image. Each work contains a small speaker which enables the audience to hear the interview while looking at the work. With these structures in the artwork the audience is able to listen to the personal stories at the border of “Here in Elsewhere” expanded with historical context and human dignity to convey a deeper message.
