Paul McCarthy participates in London’s annual Sculpture in the City from June 27, 2017, to May 1, 2018. In this seventh edition of the project, 16 artworks will make up the outdoor sculpture park in the City of London (also known as the “Square Mile”), among Britain’s most famous buildings. This year the artworks are spread further across the Square Mile, including installations at six new locations and ranging greatly in form and scale. Among these works, McCarthy presents Apple Tree Boy Apple Tree Girl (2010), two monumental figurines that belong to the artist’s Hummel series. Installed in front of St. Helen’s Church, Bishopsgate, the 5-meter sculpture is inspired by the porcelain ‘Hummel’ figures that became popular when American soldiers, who were stationed in Germany during World War II, sent them home as souvenirs. McCarthy has enlarged and modified the original decorative figures to resemble Adam and Eve, playing with the idealization of plump, cherubic children. These Überkinders are distorted to the point of abstraction, appearing adorable and obscene all at once.
