Suki Seokyeong Kang participates in May You Live in Interesting Times, the main exhibition of the 58th Venice Biennale that takes place in the Arsenale and the Central Pavilion of the Giardini in Venice, Italy, from May 11 to November 24, 2019. Curated by Ralph Rugoff and organized by the Venice Biennale which is chaired by Paolo Baratta, the exhibition includes a total of 79 artist entries.

Under the overarching theme of May You Live in Interesting Times, this year’s Venice Biennale aims to present art that can serve as a guide to how people can think and live in such “interesting times.” Suki Seokyeong Kang majored in Oriental Painting; her work balances painting, sculpture, video, and performance, cultivating a unique artistic vocabulary that references and reinterprets various Korean traditions. In today’s “interesting times” when there is tension surrounding geopolitics both in Korea and around the world, Kang’s work seeks to present an alternative perspective through which individuals can build harmonious relationships with one another, effectively converging with the guiding theme of this year's Venice Biennale.

Suki Seokyeong Kang introduces two different installation pieces in the Arsenale and the Giardini for the main exhibition of the biennale. Inside the Arsenale, she showcases new work from her Land Sand Strand series. First introduced at the Liverpool Biennial (2018), the series is an extension of Black Mat Oriole, a project she has developed over the past five years. Encompassing painting, installation, performance, and video, this ongoing multipart installation is a visual translation of a traditional Korean court dance called chunaengmu (春鶯舞), which was developed in the Joseon Dynasty (the last dynasty of pre-modern Korea, from 1392 to 1897). In the Giardini, Kang presents new works from one of her oldest ongoing series titled Grandmother Tower, which was first conceived as sculptural portraits of her grandmother and serves as the prototype of the artist’s visual logic through which she constructs her installations and choreographic movements.


강서경, 제58회 베니스 비엔날레 본전시 《흥미로운 시대를 살아가기를》에 참가

강서경은 이탈리아 베니스에 위치한 쟈르디니의 센트럴 파빌리온과 아르세날레에서 5월 11일 공식 개막한 제58회 베니스 비엔날레 본전시 《흥미로운 시대에 살아가기를》에 참가한다. 전세계 총 79명의 작가가 참가한 이번 베니스 비엔날레 본전시의 총감독은 런던 헤이워드 갤러리의 디렉터로 활동 중이며, 2015년 리옹비엔날레를 이끈 랄프 루고프(Ralph Rugoff)가 맡았다.

이번 베니스 비엔날레는 ‘May You Live in Interesting Times (흥미로운 시대를 살아가기를)’라는 주제 하에, 다시 한번 도래한 “흥미로운 시대” 속에서 어떻게 사고하고 살아가야 할지에 대한 일종의 가이드로 기능할 수 있는 미술을 제시하고자 한다. 동양화를 전공한 강서경은 꾸준히 전통을 참고하고, 그 논리를 재해석해 오늘의 풍경을 분석하는 고유한 작업을 전개해오고 있다. 전세계적으로 다양한 경계 간의 갈등이 고조되고 있는 현재의 “흥미로운 시대”에 강서경의 작품이 현대의 개개인에게 세상과 보다 조화롭게 관계 맺을 수 있는 어떤 대안적 관점을 제시한다는 점에서 이번 베니스 비엔날레의 주제와도 완벽히 조우한다.

강서경은 아르세날레와 쟈르디니, 두 개의 공간에 각기 다른 두 개의 설치 작품을 소개한다. 아르세날레 전시장에서는 신작으로 구성된 <땅 모래 지류(Land Sand Strand)> 연작을 선보인다. 리버풀 비엔날레(2018)에서 처음 선보인 바 있는 이 작업은 강서경이 지난 5년 간 꾸준히 발전시켜온 <검은 자리 꾀꼬리(Black Mat Oriole)>프로젝트의 연장선에 있다. 회화, 설치, 퍼포먼스, 영상 등 다양한 매체를 아우르는 다층 설치로, 조선시대에 발달된 한국의 전통 궁중 무용인 ‘춘앵무(春鶯舞)’를 시각적으로 재해석했다. 쟈르디니에서는 강서경의 가장 오래된 연작 중 하나인 <그랜드마더 타워(Grandmother Tower)>를 선보인다. 작가가 구축하는 시공간에 대한 시각적 논리의 원형으로 기능하기도 하는 본 연작은 작가가 할머니의 초상을 조각으로 구현하는 데서 시작되었다. 제58회 베니스 비엔날레는 오는 11월 24일까지 전시된다.
