The internationally acclaimed Swiss contemporary artist Ugo Rondinone has organized a benefit auction titled STOP BLADDER CANCER in order to raise funds for critical research on bladder cancer in collaboration with Sotheby’s on September 26, 2019, in New York. Rondinone writes, “in May 2017 I was diagnosed with high-grade bladder cancer. Like most people, I had never heard of it or known someone diagnosed with bladder cancer.” Noting that funds for research on bladder cancer is relatively low considering the high incident rate of bladder cancer with 429,800 new cases and 165,100 deaths in the United States in 2019, Rondinone decided to partner with Sotheby’s to support bladder cancer research and create awareness. Fourteen contemporary artists including Oscar Murillo and Sara Lucas have contributed significant works to the auction in support of this special cause.
The pre-sale exhibition will be open to the public from September 19 to 25 and all works sold will support critical funding for bladder cancer treatment research at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. This benefit auction will help create awareness about and motivate future funding for bladder cancer research with the intention of improving the treatment of bladder cancer. 스위스 출신의 세계적인 현대미술가 우고 론디노네가 오는 9월 26일 뉴욕에서 소더비와 함께 방광암 연구 기금 마련 자선 경매 ‘STOP BLADDER CANCER’를 연다. “지난 2017년 방광암을 판정 받았지만, 나는 이 암에 대해 들어본 적도, 이 암에 걸린 사람을 본 적도 없었다.” 우고 론디노네는 미국에서만 한 해 249,800명이 방광암을 판정 받고 165,100명이 사망할 정도로 흔한 병임에도 정작 치료 연구를 위한 기금이 제대로 마련되지 못하는 상황에 주목하고, 소더비와 함께 방광암에 대한 인식 개선 및 기금 마련을 위한 자선 경매를 기획했다. 이에 오스카 무리조, 사라 루카스 등 동시대 미술 작가 14명도 주요 작품을 기증함으로써 이번 행사의 취지에 그 뜻을 함께 했다.
