Suki Seokyeong Kang is the subject of a solo exhibition eponymously titled Suki Seokyeong Kang at Mudam Luxembourg through April 1, 2020. The winner of the Baloise Art Prize at Art Basel in 2018, Kang is the fourth artist to enter Mudam’s collection with the support of the Baloise Group since the museum became a partner of the Prize in 2015. Known for her works that encompass paintings, installation, and video, Kang has been working on narrative themes extracted from her personal history. In this exhibition, Kang presents new works centered around the Grandmother Tower and Rove and Round series for the museum’s Sculpture Garden.

Conceived as sculptural portraits of Kang’s grandmother, Grandmother Tower – Tow #18-01 visualizes her late grandmother’s precarious yet beautiful body and presence utilizing materials such as walkers, steel, and thread. Rove and Round – face, mat, belly, #18-01, as can be inferred from the paradoxical title, employs the artist’s own body as a motif that signifies the fact that roving is not about embarking on a journey afar, but rather circling within one’s place. Such works portray how individuals occupy space and time as they come together to interact in society while maintaining their position within. Throughout the duration of the exhibition, performances (or “activations” to use the artist’s terminology) of movements alongside the artworks are scheduled for September 28-29, October 12-13, and October 19-20.


2018 발로아즈 상 수상자 강서경, 무담 룩셈부르크에서 개인전 《Suki Seokyeong Kang》 개최

지난해 아트바젤의 발로아즈 상(Baloise Art Prize)을 수상하며 세계 미술계의 주목을 받고 있는 강서경의 개인전 《Suki Seokyeong Kang》이 무담 룩셈부르크(Mudam Luxembourg)에서 내년 4월 1일까지 열린다. 무담 룩셈부르크는 2015년부터 매년 발로아즈 수상작을 전시하고 있으며, 강서경은 이 곳에서 전시를 여는 4번째 수상 작가다. 회화, 설치, 영상 등을 조화시킨 독창적인 작업으로 유명한 강서경은 개인사에서 추출한 서사적인 주제를 바탕으로 작업을 전개해오고 있다. 미술관 조각 공원에 마련된 이번 전시에서는 <그랜드마더 타워>연작과 <둥근 유랑>연작이 공개된다.

<그랜드마더 타워 – 토 Tow #18-01>은 작가 본인의 할머니에 대한 기억을 주제로 한 작품으로 보행기, 철, 실 등의 재료를 사용하여 위태롭지만 아름다운 할머니의 신체 및 존재감을 형상화했다. 또한 작가의 신체를 모티프로 한 <둥근 유랑 – 얼굴, 자리, 배 #18-01>은 역설적인 제목에서 나타나듯 유랑이란 멀리 떠나는 것이 아니라 계속 자신의 자리를 돌고 도는 것이라는 의미가 담겨있는 작품이다. 작가는 불안하고 위태롭지만 균형을 찾아가는 신체의 모습을 통해 사회 안에서 자신의 위치와 영역을 지키며 살아가는 개인의 모습을 그려낸다. 관객을 작품 주체로 초대하여 참여자가 직접 움직임을 보여주는 ‘액티베이션(Activation)’은 오는 9월 28-29일, 10월 12-13일, 19-20일에 걸쳐 전시장에서 진행될 예정이다.
