Elmgreen & Dragset have created new installation titled Bent Pool for a commissioned project for the city of Miami Beach. Bent Pool is permanently installed outside the Miami Beach Convention Center to coincide with the Miami Art Week. Elmgreen & Dragset, who often reinterpret familiar spatial and cultural structures that surround us in modern times with criticality and subversive wit, offer viewers a fresh perspective into the landscape of the city with the Bent Pool.

Bent Pool is a 6-meter-high sculptural installation which features a swimming pool folded in half, continuing Elmgreen & Dragset’s longstanding interest in the swimming pool motif. Identified by details such as the ladder, diving board, and pool lamps, the abstracted object can easily be recognized as a swimming pool even though its arched shape prevents it from carrying water. Drawing on the Minimalist reductive tradition and use of geometric forms, Bent Pool features a turquoise blue interior, one of Elmgreen & Dragset’s signature colors, and a matte white exterior, leading the work to stand out against the greenery of the park outside the Miami Beach Convention Center. Due to Miami Beach’s status as a beloved holiday destination, swimming pools are a natural part of the city’s fabric. The distorted shaped of the Bent Pool, however, makes us more aware of how objects are perceived relative to different contexts. Elmgreen & Dragset are not limited to presenting messages through the sculptures, but develop possibilities of public art that remind us of the enjoyment that can be found in so many experiences, oftentimes in the everyday.


엘름그린 & 드라그셋(Elmgreen & Dragset), 마이애미 시 공공미술 커미션 프로젝트 신작 공개

아티스트 듀오 엘름그린 & 드라그셋이 마이애미 비치 시 공공미술 커미션 프로젝트로 설치 신작 <Bent Pool>을 선보인다. 마이애미 비치 컨벤션 센터 야외 공간에 영구 설치된 <Bent Pool>은 아트 바젤 마이애미 비치가 열리는 ‘마이애미 아트 위크‘와 맞물려 공개된다. 현대인을 둘러싼 익숙한 공간과 문화구조에 대해 끊임없이 자문하고, 특유의 위트와 비판정신으로 새롭게 재해석해온 엘름그린 & 드라그셋은 이번 프로젝트에서 작가의 눈을 통해 마이애미의 익숙한 풍경을 새로운 관점으로 매개한다.

<Bent Pool>은 엘름그린 & 드라그셋이 그간 선보여온 ‘수영장‘ 모티프 작업 군의 연장선에 있는 작품으로 제목처럼 수영장이 아치 형태로 구부러진, 높이 6미터에 달하는 대규모 설치작이다. 작품은 일반적인 수영장의 사다리, 다이빙 보드, 조명 시설 등을 충실히 재현하되, 구부러져 세워진 형태로 인해 물을 담을 수 없다는 근본적인 한계를 지니고 있다. 미니멀리즘적인 기하추상 형태의 이 작품은 엘름그린 & 드라그셋 특유의 청록색과 무광 흰색을 병치하여 공원의 푸른색과 선명하게 어우러진다. 미국의 대표 휴양도시 마이애미에서 ‘수영장‘은 도시 곳곳에서 볼 수 있는 보편적인 시설이지만, 왜곡된 형태의 이 수영장은 일상의 익숙한 대상이 맥락에 따라 새롭게 인식될 수 있는 가능성을 제시한다. 동시에 작가는 조각의 형태와 메시지의 전달에 국한되지 않고, 특정 지역에 일상적인 즐거움과 활기를 부여하는 공공미술의 새로운 가능성을 자신의 방식대로 탐구한다.
