The internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Paul McCarthy is the subject of a solo exhibition titled Paul McCarthy: Head Space, Drawings 1963-2019 at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles through May 10, 2020. Celebrated for his works that encompass a wide spectrum of genres including performance, video, installation, sculpture, photography, and drawing, McCarthy explores ideas of omnipresent capitalist culture along with the cynical aspects of crowd psychology. This comprehensive survey endeavors to show the artist’s drawings from the last five decades of his practice, which were vital in establishing McCarthy’s artistic vocabulary.

In this exhibition, McCarthy introduces a large body of work spanning over 600 drawings which employ a range of materials such as charcoal and graphite to more unorthodox ones including ketchup and peanut butter. Since the 1970s, the artist’s drawings which originated as part of the working process have transformed into an integral part of his sculptures, installations, and performances. McCarthy’s artistic vocabulary, mainly represented by his drawings, bestows new principles into the existing structure of nature and society through methods of duplication, magnification, reduction, distortion, and conjunction. On view at the exhibition are works such as Dopwhite, WS (2009), part of a series inspired by the Walt Disney animation ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ (1937), the video performance CSSC Coach Stage Stage Coach (2017), and drawings from the artist’s ongoing project, NV Night Vater (2019-). Meanwhile, DelMonico Books will be publishing a catalogue on the exhibition, consisting of over 400 drawings and an artist interview.

세계적인 현대미술가 폴 맥카시(Paul McCarthy)의 개인전 《Paul McCarthy: Head Space, Drawings 1963–2019》이 LA 해머 미술관에서 2020년 5월 10일까지 열린다. 폴 맥카시는 퍼포먼스부터 비디오, 설치, 조각, 사진, 드로잉에 이르기까지 다양한 장르를 넘나들며, 우리가 무의식적으로 받아들이는 자본주의 문화와 대중심리의 어두운 심연에 주목한 작업을 전개해왔다. 특별히 이번 개인전에서는 그의 예술 세계의 근간을 이루는 지난 50년 간의 드로잉 작품들을 집중 조명한다.

이번 전시는 석탄, 흑연 등 일반적 재료부터 비전통적 재료인 케첩, 땅콩버터 등으로 그린 600여 점의 방대한 드로잉 작품들로 구성된다. 작품 설계를 위한 발상의 수단으로 시작된 그의 드로잉은 1970년대부터 조각, 설치, 퍼포먼스 작품의 일부가 되었다. 복제, 확대/축소, 왜곡, 결합 등의 방식으로 본래의 자연 및 세상의 체계에 새로운 질서를 부여하는 작가의 독자적 세계는 드로잉 작품에도 여실히 드러난다. 이번 전시에는 월트 디즈니 애니메이션 ‘백설공주와 일곱 난쟁이’(1937)를 주제로 한 연작의 바탕이 된 <Dopwhite, WS>(2009)와 비디오 퍼포먼스 <CSSC Coach Stage Stage Coach>(2017), 그리고 <NV Night Vater>(2019–)에 활용된 드로잉 작품들이 함께 공개된다. 한편 전시를 기념하여 폴 맥카시의 드로잉 작품 400여 점과 함께 작가 인터뷰가 수록된 도록(델모니코 북스 출판)이 발간된다.
