Donald Judd, widely considered one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century, is the subject of a solo exhibition eponymously titled Judd at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. During his lifetime, Judd revolutionized the language of modern sculpture by exploring the idea of ‘object-making’ and demonstrating a profound approach to form, structure, and material. The exhibition, which marks the first major retrospective for the artist to be held in the U.S. in three decades, highlights the full scope of Judd’s career by bringing together a comprehensive selection of 70 works including paintings, sculptures, drawings, objects, and furniture.

The exhibition presents works from the 1960s to the 1990s in chronological order, including early drawings which were showcased in 1963 at the Green Gallery, New York, along with Judd’s signature series from the mid-1960s often referred to as ‘progressions’ and ‘stacks.’ The space will also feature site-specific installations created in the 1970s as well as the internationally renowned Untitled (1980-1990s) series, which captures Judd’s reserved artistic vocabulary. Meanwhile, visitors can browse through a range of Judd-designed furniture displayed at the “reading room” located by the entrance of the exhibition hall. This comprehensive survey of Judd’s life-long portfolio of works, which transformed art from the “abstract and ambiguous” to the “deliberate and specific,” runs through July 11, 2020.

20세기 미술의 거장 도날드 저드의 개인전 《Judd》가 뉴욕 현대미술관에서 열린다. 물체의 구조적 속성과 물질성에 주목하여 그 자체로 존재하는 ‘오브제’를 탐구해온 저드는 전통적인 미술사의 흐름을 바꾸는 전례 없는 예술 세계를 구축해왔다. 미국에서 30년 만에 열리는 대규모 회고전인 이번 전시는 회화, 조각, 드로잉, 오브제, 가구 작업에 이르기까지 저드의 작품 세계를 총망라하는 70여 점의 작품들을 공개한다.

이번 개인전은 1960년대부터 1990년대까지의 작품들을 연대기 순으로 선보인다. 1963년 뉴욕 그린 갤러리(Green Gallery)에 소개되었던 초기 드로잉 작품을 시작으로 1960년대 중반에 제작된 저드의 대표작 <연속(progressions)>, <쌓기(stacks)> 시리즈가 공개된다. 1970년대 장소 특정적 설치작품을 비롯하여 작가의 정제된 예술 세계가 고스란히 담긴 1980-90년대 대표작 <무제(Untitled)> 시리즈도 함께 선보인다. 한편 저드는 정통 예술의 경계를 넘어 디자인과 건축 영역에서도 활발한 활동을 펼쳤는데, 전시장 입구에 설치된 ‘reading room’에서는 저드가 디자인한 가구들이 전시된다. ‘추상적이고 모호한’ 예술을 ‘의도적이고 명료한’ 세계로 전환시킨 저드의 작품들을 만날 수 있는 이번 전시는 오는 7월 11일까지 계속된다.
