The contemporary artist Park Chan-kyong is currently participating in Rewriting the poetry, an exhibition marking the 60th anniversary of the 3•15 Movement at the Gyeongnam Provincial Museum of Art. The exhibition includes a roster of seven leading Korean contemporary artists who explore the undiscovered motives and subjects hidden behind the vast context of historical discourse. Known for his works which critically reflect upon the multilateral implications of modern Korean history by traversing reality and fiction, Park presents Citizen’s Forest (2016) as part of the exhibition.

Inspired by Kim Soo-young’s poem Colossal Roots (1964) and Oh Yoon’s unfinished painting The Lemures (1984), Citizen’s Forest is a three-channel video presented in the form of a traditional ‘shan-su (landscape)’ scroll painting. The groups of people marching through the forest represent the countless, nameless lives lost in the tragic episodes of Korea’s modernization including the Donghak Peasant Revolution (1894), the Korean War (1950-1953), the Gwangju Uprising (1980), and the recent Sewol Ferry Disaster (2014). Park recalls these victims of the past to the present, creating a site to solemnly mourn these wandering spirits and provide consolation. The exhibition is spread across three galleries and also features Choi Suhwan’s visualization of circulating history titled doppelganger (2018) and Kang Taehun’s portrayal of the darker sides of social structure titled Dead-end#2 (2019). The exhibition, which introduces visitors to a novel outlook on the world by showcasing works that provide a multifaceted perspective on history, runs through May 17, 2020.


박찬경, 경남도립미술관 그룹전 《새로운 시(詩)의 시대》 참가

현대미술가 박찬경은 경남도립미술관에서 열리는 3.15 의거 60주년 기념전 《새로운 시(詩)의 시대》에 참가한다. 박찬경을 비롯해 7인의 한국 현대미술가들이 참가하는 이번 전시는 정형화된 거대 담론의 역사 이면에 있는 미시적인 실체와 동기, 그리고 일상적 삶에 주목한다. 실재와 허구를 오가며 한국 근현대사의 다변적 의미를 탐구하고 비판적으로 성찰해온 박찬경은 이번 전시에서 <시민의 숲>(2016)을 선보인다.

시인 김수영(1921-1968)의 <거대한 뿌리>(1964)와 화가 오윤(1946-1986)의 미완성작 <원귀도>(1984)에서 영감 받아 제작된 <시민의 숲>은 한 폭의 산수화처럼 펼쳐진 3채널 비디오 작품이다. 작품 속 산을 둘러싸고 행군하는 인물들은 1894년 동학농민운동, 1950~53년 한국전쟁, 1980년 5·18 민주화 운동, 2014년 세월호 참사 등 역사 속 비극적 사건들의 희생자들이다. 작가는 역사 속 이름 없던 존재들을 현재로 불러내 잠들지 못한 원혼을 위로한다. 총 3개의 전시실에 걸쳐 진행되는 이번 전시는 순환되는 역사를 움직임으로 시각화한 최수환의 <도플갱어>(2018), 사회 구조의 이면을 다룬 강태훈의 <막다른 길#2>(2019) 등을 함께 선보인다. 다원적인 시각으로 역사를 응시하는 작품들을 통해 우리가 미처 보거나 생각하지 못했던 세계를 만날 수 있는 이번 전시는 오는 5월 17일까지 진행된다.
