국제갤러리의 작가 이혜림은 미국 코네티컷 주 웨스트포트 아트센터(Westport Arts Center)에서 열리는 <토이스토리 Toy Story> 전에 참여한다. 국 내외의 유수의 작가들 알렉산더 칼더, 타카시 무라카미, 모튼 바틀렛을 포함한 총 30명의 작가가 참여하는 대규모의 그룹전시는 일상 생활 속 장난감에 대한 기억과 대중적이고도, 상징적 이미지의 연관성을 다룬 50여가지 작품들을 선보인다.
웨스트포트 아트센터의 디렉터 헬렌 클리서 듀링(Helen Klisser During)의 코네티컷 포스트 지의 인터뷰에 따르면, “장난감은 우리의 상상력의 원천이 되는 도구와도 같다”고 말했다. 이번 이혜림의 전시 참여작인 Crystal City 연작은 사회적인 미의 기준에 대한 상징적인 캐릭터들로 구성된 평면작품으로서, 대중적인 분위기를 자아내면서도 동시에 지나친 대중적 이미지의 상징에 대한 비평적인 의미를 함축하고 있다.
Kukje Gallery is pleased to announce Hye Rim Lee’s participation in Toy Story, presented by the Westport Arts Center in Connecticut. The large-scale group exhibition brings together a total of 30 artists, including Alexander Calder, Takashi Murakami, and Morton Bartlett, all of whose works deal with toys?in terms of both how we relate to them in everyday life, and their symbolism.
In an interview with Helen Klisser During published in the Connecticut Post Newspaper, Ms. During noted that “toys are the tools that help us to imagine.” For this occasion, Lee is showcasing her Crystal City series, wherein she challenges the contemporary standards of beauty. Lee creates popular images using her symbolic characters while retaining the critical implications behind these images.
