Haegue Yang, Kim Hong Joo, Lee Ufan, Park Seo-Bo, and Suki Seokyeong Kang are currently participating in Art Plant Asia 2020’s main exhibition Hare Way Object, which runs through November 22, 2020, at Deoksugung Palace, Seoul, Korea. The title of the exhibition—Hare Way Object—is an arbitrary combination of ‘Hare Way,’ an old term describing the Jeongdong area where Deoksugung Palace is located, and ‘Object,’ a word that describes all matters not mankind, representing the interrelated landscapes of the current Asian and Korean contemporary art scenes. A wide range of works by a roster of eleven painters from postwar and 1970s Korea, nineteen Korean contemporary artists, and three Asian contemporary artists are shown in harmony with one another in the main halls, corridors, and courtyards of Deoksugung Palace. Participating artists include important figures from Korea’s postwar era such as Kim Tschang-Yeul, Kim Whanki, Nam Kwan, and Yun Hyong-keun, followed by contemporary Korean and Asian artists including Lee Bul, Chung Heeseung, Ho Rui An, and Royce Ng. The exhibition aims to reflect upon and encompass the growth of Asian and Korean art throughout history.

Displayed in the hallways of Hamnyeongjeon are works created by Korean painters between the 1950s and 1970s, reinterpreted within the traditional setting of Deoksugung Palace. In the ‘Modern and Contemporary Room 2,’ visitors encounter works including Lee Ufan’s signature From Line series and Park Seo-Bo’s Écriture No. 21-75 (1975), showcased in tandem with Kim Hong Joo’s hyperrealistic portrait titled Untitled (1979). Such juxtaposition provides a striking visual contrast between Dansaekhwa paintings, which exerted a powerful influence on the local arts scene throughout the 1970s, and Kim’s hyperrealistic paintings characterized by his unique technique of using ultra-fine brushstrokes. Seen in the halls of Seogeodang, Junmyeongdang, Jeukjodang, and the outdoor courtyards are a series of contemporary artworks, one of which is Haegue Yang’s Sonic Obscuring Hairy Hug (2020) from the artist’s Sonic Sculptures (2013-) series, employing bells as the main material. The sculpture, covered with black brass- and nickel-plated bells and plastic twine, emits a unique energy as it hangs from the ceiling. At the corner of Hamnyeongjeon stands Suki Seokyeong Kang’s Narrow Meadow #18-04 (2013-2018) and Rove and Round #18-02 (2018-2019), marking a rare encounter between the modern and traditional by blending in with the serene backgrounds of the palace. Along with the exhibition, which runs for approximately a month, Art Plant Asia 2020 will be hosting a series of collateral programs such as Gallery Day along with local and international academic seminars.
