Kwon Young-Woo, a pioneering figure of the seminal Korean postwar art movement referred to as Dansaekhwa, is the subject of a solo exhibition at Blum & Poe Tokyo, from April 3, 2021, through May 22, 2021. The solo presentation—which showcases a selection of Kwon’s signature works utilizing ink and paper—marks his first exhibition with the gallery in five years since his last show at Blum & Poe New York, and his first in Tokyo. While Kwon’s works have been featured in numerous group exhibitions in the past, his current solo presentation provides a more comprehensive understanding of the artist’s practice by scrutinizing his artistic vocabulary and technique with a wide range of works in various sizes.

Stemming from Chinese ink painting traditions, Kwon began experimenting with techniques of scratching, puncturing, and cutting the delicate surface of the traditional Korean paper, hanji, in the 1960s. This unconventional approach to utilizing paper itself as a medium garnered much international acclaim, such as at the 1965 Tokyo Biennale and the exhibition Five Korean Artists, Five Kinds of White at Tokyo Gallery in 1975, which was the first exhibition where Dansaekhwa was introduced globally, and eventually validated status and potential of Kwon’s work in the international art market. Throughout his career, the artist continuously experimented with paper as a material as well as a technique, actively expanding the scopes of his artistic vocabulary. Untitled (1988), which depicts a pale blue surface punctured with numerous holes, and Untitled (2002), which delivers a unique tension between the paper and the canvas, are notable examples of the artist’s commitment to experimentation. As the gallery is currently open by appointment only, the six-week-long exhibition can be visited by making a reservation via the Blum & Poe website (https://blumandpoe.com/reservation).
