The internationally acclaimed artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset recently unveiled Life Rings (2021), a permanent installation created with multiple lifebuoys, at the Royal Djurgärden in Stockholm, Sweden. Elmgreen & Dragset’s first public sculpture in Sweden and the Royal Djurgärden’s second permanent work in their sculpture park, Life Rings questions human relationships and existing social structures utilizing subversive wit and underlying criticality which are signature to the artist duo. The Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation, founded in 2019 in order to support arts and culture events in Sweden, has taken on transforming the Royal Djurgärden into a sculpture park as part of its inaugural project. Elmgreen & Dragset has been selected as this year’s artist with the task of reinterpreting everyday objects in an unexpected environment, generating new perspectives.

Life Rings is a large-scale installation with a height of 8 meters constructed with a cluster of lifebuoys, normally used for rescue in crisis situations. The lifebuoys—interconnected in a circuit that extends upwards into the air, no longer able to serve their original purpose—work as a symbol for indirect criticism against individualism in modern society, and a call for the need of cooperation and solidarity between individuals. As the surrounding environment is also often critical to delivering Elmgreen & Dragset’s message, Life Ring’s proximity to water encourages contemplation on the boundaries between public and private spaces, while simultaneously inviting viewers to reflect on humanity and the fragility of life.

엘름그린 & 드라그셋, 스웬덴 스톡홀름 로열 유르고덴 공원(Royal Djurgården)에 영구 설치 작품 <Life Rings> 공개

세계적인 작가 듀오 엘름그린 & 드라그셋이 스웨덴 스톡홀름에 위치한 로열 유르고덴(Royal Djurgärden) 공원에 다수의 구명부표로 이루어진 <Life Rings>(2021)를 영구 설치했다. 이번 작품은 이들이 스웨덴에서 처음 소개하는 공공미술작품이자 로열 유르고덴 공원에서 선보이는 두 번째 작업으로, 엘름그린 & 드라그셋 특유의 위트 있는 비판정신으로 현대인들의 인간관계와 사회적 구조에 대해 역설한다. 스웨덴의 문화 활동을 지원하기 위해 2019년 설립되어 첫 프로젝트로 로열 유르고르덴 공원을 조각 공원으로 조성하고 있는 프린세스 에스텔 문화재단(Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation)에 의해 올해의 아티스트로 선정된 엘름그린 & 드라그셋은 또 한 번 일상적 오브제를 새로운 환경에 비치하는 방식으로 같은 것을 바라보는 색다른 관점을 제시한다.

<Life Rings>는 본래 위급상황에서 사람을 구출하는 용도인 구명부표로 구성된 8m 높이의 대형 설치 조각이다. 안전을 상징하는 구명부표를 체인 형식으로 연결해가며 허공을 향해 쌓아 올린 본 작품에서는 구명부표가 본래의 기능을 상실하게 된다. 엘름그린 & 드라그셋은 이런 모순적인 구조를 통해 개인주의가 만연한 현대사회를 우회적으로 비판하는 동시에 그 안에서 살아가는 구성원들 개개인간에 필요한 협업과 단결의 가치를 강조한다. 이들의 작업에서 작품이 설치되는 환경 역시 작품의 중요한 요소로 작용하는 만큼, 이번에도 <Life Rings>를 강변에 설치함으로써 공공장소와 사적 공간 사이의 경계 등에 대한 고찰을 자연스럽게 유도하고 인류와 삶의 섬세함과 연약함을 조명한다.
