국제갤러리의 이혜림 작가는 뉴욕 첼시에 위치한 Freight+Volume에서 열리는 그룹 전시 에 참여한다. 이 전시는 전통적 의미의 초상화를 대하는 태도에서부터 그 재료로 갖는 현대적 담론이 담긴 작품들을 선정하였다. 이혜림 작가를 포함하여, 총 33명의 참여작가들은 페인팅, 비디오, 조각, 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 기법을 사용하여 그들만의 초상화를 표현했다.
초상화는 때때로 현대적인 담론이 어려운 분야로 여겨졌지만, 작품의 지역적, 사회적, 문화적 환경이 반영되어있는 매체적 특징을 갖는다. 나아가, 그림이 그려지는 순간 작가와 모델 사이에서 일어나는 특별한 상호관계는 가장 주요한 형식이라 할 수 있다.
이번 전시는 초상화 제작 이면의 복잡하고 다양한 환경을 고려하고, 관람객이 작가와 대상 사이의 시점에서 발견할 수 있는 지점에 대한 관심으로 기획되었다.

Kukje Gallery’s represented artist Hye Rim Lee is participating in a group exhibition MIE: A Portrait by 33 Artists, presented by Freight + Volume, a Chelsea gallery in New York. Drawing on the ancient tradition of portraiture, but brining the medium into a contemporary discourse, this exhibition features 33 contemporary artists, working in every medium such as painting, drawing, video, sculpture and performance – who have worked in the realm of portraiture.
The subject recorded in a portrait does not speak directly to the viewer, but its voice emanates through the channel of the regional, social, and cultural circumstances in which the portrait is created. It is further shaped by the technique of the artist and the unique interaction between the artist and the model throughout the painting process.
The current exhibition explores the complex and diverse conditions that surround the creation of a portrait, and the viewer’s experience while observing the creative process that take place between the artist and the subject.
