The British contemporary artist Julian Opie is the subject of a solo exhibition titled Julian Opie: Collected Works/Works Collected, on view through March 6, 2022 at Newlands House Gallery, Petworth, UK. Situated in a historic 18th-century townhouse, Newlands House Gallery opened its doors to the public in March of 2020 and has since staged exhibitions featuring prominent 20th-century artists. As its fifth exhibition—following those of celebrated artists such as Helmut Newton, Ron Arad, and Joan Miro—Julian Opie: Collected Works/Works Collected showcases over 100 pieces from the artist’s personal collection, ranging from antiquities to contemporary art, alongside a selection of his own sculptures, paintings, and films.

Opie has often referred to drawing inspiration from antiquities and works by other contemporary artists, mentioning that “the work of others pushes me beyond what I know and assume," and that it "suggests new logics and approaches.” In this context, Julian Opie: Collected Works/Works Collected provides yet another opportunity to reflect on the British artist’s interest in art spanning centuries of history.

Displayed in the exhibition are Opie’s paintings characterized by his signature style of simple lines and flat colors, LED installations, mosaic portraits, sculptures, and videos alongside his personal collection of art that has inspired his unique work. His collection of art spans a range of eras and genres, from Greco-Roman statuary and Egyptian sarcophagi to works by contemporary artists such as Chuck Close, Roy Lichtenstein, and Sol LeWitt. Each piece from the artist’s personal collection comes into intimate dialogue with his work. For instance, everyday scenes of Japanese women portrayed by the renowned Ukiyo-e printmaker Kitagawa Utamaro hang next to Ruth Smoking 2. (2006)—Opie’s animated LCD portrait of a woman smoking a cigarette, while silhouette portraits by the 19th-century French painter Auguste Edouard are presented in juxtaposition with Opie’s own series of silhouettes depicting his family and friends. Installed in the center of the garden is Yoko XIX (2006), the British contemporary artist Don Brown’s sculptural portrait of his wife, alongside two of Opie’s animal sculptures.

Meticulously curated in in consideration of the unique architecture of Newlands House Gallery, the show invites viewers to reflect on the stylistic and narrative similarities between works from a range of cultural milieus. In doing so, it places Opie’s oeuvre within a broader art historical context, providing a closer look into his artistic endeavor across various mediums and techniques.

줄리안 오피, 영국 뉴랜드 하우스 갤러리에서 개인전 《Julian Opie: Collected Works/Works Collected》 개최

현대미술가 줄리안 오피의 개인전 《Julian Opie: Collected Works/Works Collected》가 영국 페트워스의 뉴랜드 하우스 갤러리(Newlands House Gallery)에서 오는 3월 6일까지 열린다. 2020년 3월에 개관한 뉴랜드 하우스 갤러리는 18세기에 지어진 대저택을 보존하여 만든 공간으로, 20세기의 저명한 예술가들을 조명하는 다채로운 전시를 소개해왔다. 헬무트 뉴튼, 론 아라드, 호안 미로 등에 이어 다섯 번째로 열리는 이번 전시에서 줄리안 오피는 고미술부터 현대미술까지 100여 점에 이르는 본인의 컬렉션을 조각, 회화, 영상 작업 등과 함께 선보인다.

오피는 과거의 예술은 물론 동시대미술가들의 작품에서 예술적 영감을 얻는다고 종종 밝혀왔다. 그는 “다른 예술가들의 작업은 내가 상정하는 세상 너머로 나를 밀어붙이고, 대상에 대한 새로운 접근 방식과 논리를 제안한다”고 이야기한 바 있는데, 이번 전시 역시 세기를 넘나드는 예술에 대한 작가의 관심이 고스란히 반영되었다.

전시장에는 간결한 선과 평면적인 색이 특징인 그의 시그니처 회화는 물론 LED 설치, 모자이크 작품, 조각, 영상 등이 이 모든 작업의 예술적 영감이 된 그의 컬렉션과 함께 배치되어 있다. 오피의 컬렉션은 고대 그리스와 로마의 조각상 및 이집트 석관부터 척 클로즈, 로이 리히텐슈타인, 솔 르윗 등 근현대미술 작가들의 작품까지 각 시대와 양식을 아우르는데, 각 수집품은 작가의 작업과 서로 긴밀하게 상호작용하며 흥미로운 대화를 이끌어 낸다. 예컨대 일본 에도 시대의 우키요에 화가 기타가와 우타마로의 미인도가 담배 피는 여성을 묘사한 오피의 LCD 애니메이션 작업 <Ruth Smoking 2.>(2006)와 나란히 배치되어 있으며, 19세기 프랑스 화가 오귀스트 에두아르의 실루엣 초상화가 가족과 지인을 형상화한 오피의 실루엣 연작과 함께 전시되는 식이다. 한편 정원에는 영국 현대미술가 돈 브라운이 자신의 부인을 묘사한 조각 <Yoko XIX>(2006)이 오피가 주변에서 마주하는 동물을 소재로 작업한 조각 두 점과 함께 설치되어 있다.

전혀 다른 배경을 가진 작품 간의 양식적, 서사적 유사성과 해당 기관의 건축구조 등 다양한 요소를 염두에 두고 면밀히 설계된 본 전시는 오피의 작업 세계를 미술사적 맥락에서 재고하게 하며, 여러 소재와 기법을 활용해 작업하는 작가의 예술적 실험을 심도 있게 조명한다.
