The Chatsworth House Trust and the New Art Centre, Roche Court Sculpture Park, will present an exhibition of works by Anthony Caro. Caro at Chatsworth is the first show devoted to a single artist at Chatsworth. It provides a once in a lifetime chance to see the large work of Anthony Caro in one of Britain’s most famous historic settings. All the sculptures in the exhibition have been lent by the artist and reflect his major concerns over the past four decades. Early example of Caro’s steel sculptures painted in blue, orange and green are shown alongside example from the renowned ’flat’ series of sculpture made in Canada in rusted and varnished steel in the 1970s.More recent works from the 1990s reflect Caro’s continual experimentation with the surface, form and structure of steel.
Anthony Caro was born in 1924. He studied sculpture at Royal Academy and came to public attention with a pioneering solo exhibition at London’s Whitechapel Gallery in 1963, which established his pivotal role in the development of twentieth century sculpture. Most recently he has had solo exhibitions at Tate and on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Chatsworth House is renowned for its beautiful Baroque architecture, fascinating history and displays treasures from the Devonshire Collection, one of Europe’s most significant art collections. Chatsworth also has a long association with 20th-century art, and collections include important works by artists such as Lucien Freud, David Hockney, Barry Flanagan, Elizabeth Frink and Richard Long, as well as Anthony Caro’s early Table Piece XCIV, 1969. In addition, The other works by Sir Anthony Caro have been exhibited at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in West Yorkshire, England. Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an open-air gallery showing work by UK and international artists, including Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. It was the UK's first sculpture park based on the temporary open air exhibitions organised in London parks from the 1940s to 1970s by the Arts Council and London County Council (and later Greater London Council).
