INTRODUCTION

A Visitor to Cody Choi's cramped New York studio stumbles over stacks of books and a makeshift bed to encounter a gleaming apparition. It is a life-size wax sculpture of the nude Cody Choi posing as Michaelangelo's David. As one is still adjusting to the shock of this unexpected image, the artist rushes up to demonstrate the purpose of the work's unusual pedestal. "This is My shit box", he declares earnestly, inserting his rear end into perfectly cut opening to demonstrate the position. The most artistically relevant element of his biograpy was that when he arrived in America from Korea as an adolescent, the overwhelming sexuality of the free, but seemingly unapproachable California girls made him so nervous that he ran home from school every day with an upset stomach. His saviour was Pepto Bismol. When he decided to becom an artist,Pepto Bismol becom his medium. Though references to the pink stomach potion still abound in his work, Choi is now embarking on other ways to represent his corporeal anxiety. The wax Cody/ David statue speaks to the tension between the Asian body of the artist and the European body of Michaelangelo's David. The Korean-American artist reveals the complications of reconciling his own artistic back ground with the Western religious and cultural traditions embodied in the David. In his box-like sculptures cut out to admit the body part of the artist and his friends, Choi continues to represent a sense of the anxious body. althogh the structures contain no human forms, they succeed in resonating with human presence.
