INTRODUCTION
Choi Jeong-hwa was born in Seoul in 1961, graduated in painting art from Hongik University, and won the grand prix in Jung-ang Art Competition.
He is usually classified into kitschy artist, but affirms that his works are plastic arts. He maintains that it can't be kitsch in spite of different materials. Like that, he values the aspect of modeling than anything else.
He collects the memory of things and events which are very common in daily lives, selects the stronger and thicker one, that is the remnant in the continuous filtering, among those, and suggests it by various sizes and shapes. That is to say, all the surroundings are art, and he himself can be art. We can see the head of pig, flower, fruit, and garbage truck by the rose of Sharon together in his pictures. The viewers feel the delicate pleasure from visual pleasure and unfamiliarity as well as embarrassment. These works can be the attempt for civilized moderns weary of boredom to restore 'lost paradise', escaping void daily lives.

흔히 최정화는 키치적인 예술가로 분류되지만 그 자신은 “나의 작품은 조형적”이라고 단언한다. 재료가 바뀌었다고 해서 키치라고 할 수는 없다는 것이다. 그만큼 그는 조형적인 면을 최우선으로 삼는다.
그는 일상에서 '발에 채이는' 사물과 사건에 대한 기억을 수집한다. 그 중에서도 “강한 것, 진한 것, 즉 모든 것을 여과시켜도 계속 남아 있는 것”을 선택해 여러 크기와 형태로 제시하는데, 이는 다시 말해 자신을 둘러싼 모든 것이 예술이며, 그 자신도 예술이 될 수 있다는 말이다. 그의 작품 중에는 돼지머리와 꽃·과일/무궁화 그림 옆의 쓰레기 수거차가 함께 있다. 관객들은 당혹감과 함께 시각적 즐거움·낯설음에서 오는 묘한 즐거움에 취한다. 이러한 그의 작업들은 권태에 지친 문명화된 현대인들이 공허하기만 한 일상에서 벗어나 '실낙원'을 되찾으려는 시도로 볼 수 있다.
