INTRODUCTION
Chung-seop Yim was born in 1941 in Jinchun, Chungbuk. He graduated from Seoul National University and NYU graduate school. Since he emigrated to New York in 1973, he has been opening 10 series of exhibition in Korea and other countries beginning from Queens Art Museum Exhibition in 1980 and private exhibition in O.K Harris Art Gallery. He is one of Korean artists who is distinctively active in art activity in New York. Especially, he comes and goes to Seoul and New York for a recent several years and is doing a conspicuous art work. His work has similarity with minimalism that was popular in America from 1970s to later 1980s. Nevertheless, its content describes younger years in a home town of Korea and daily tools in agricultural life that can be seen around. It forms a specific art world that expresses modern characteristics while it involves Korean sentiment.These kinds of his works introduces a western style and still keeps our own spirit beautifully. For this reason, he will be a positive model to many Korean artists who are having difficulties with finding their own identity in a myriad of mixture of western and oriental values.

Along with it, recently he is praised of using "light" as a material theme of his work, which has been used as a major material theme in Avant Garde art since 20c.
임충섭은 1941년 충청북도 진천에서 출생하여 서울대와 미국 뉴욕대 대학원(NYU)을 졸업하였으며, 1973년 뉴욕으로 이주한 이후 1980년에 퀸즈미술관 전시와 O.K.해리스화랑에서의 개인전을 시작으로 국내외에서 10여 회에 걸친 전시회를 열었다. 현재 뉴욕화단에서 가장 활발한 작품활동을 벌이고 있는 한국 작가의 한 사람이며 특히 최근 몇 년간 서울과 뉴욕을 오가며 두드러진 작품활동을 하고 있다.
그의 작품은 1970년대 이후 1980년대 후반까지 미국을 풍미한 미니멀리즘과 유사성이 있는데 이러한 작품 외면과는 달리 작품의 내용은 한국에서의 어린시절 고향의 삶과 그 주변에 산재해 있던 농촌생활의 일상적인 도구들이 주요 재료로 등장하는 등 한국적인 정서를 내포하면서도 현대적인 성격을 표출하는 독특한 작품세계를 형성하고 있다.이러한 임충섭의 작업은 서구의 형식을 수용하면서도 우리의 정신을 아름답게 간직하고 있어, 서구와 동양의 가치관의 혼재 속에서 그 정체성을 찾는데 큰 어려움을 겪고 있는 한국의 많은 작가들에게 매우 긍정적인 모델이 될 수 있을 것이다.
