INTRODUCTION
The generally accepted idea of photography simply as the means of media, the camera being just a tool of the photographer and the association of photographs with illustration may have delayed the recognition of photography as a work of art. The exhibition “Real Reality” at Kukje Gallery presents works by four artists, Bae Bien-U, Lee Yoonjean, Lee Joong-keun, and Gwon O-sang, who deal and play with their own “reality,” providing us with an opportunity to view the different ways that photography allows us to experience and interpret “reality.” Is what we see with our eyes the definition of reality, or is our vision of reality molded and shaped by outside entities as well as our own inner prejudices? The exhibition will cautiously encourage us to reconsider whether we can conclude that a photograph, which captures an instant of time from the past, demonstrates real “reality.”
The emergence of hybrid era has caused a blur of boundaries between media and genres in art, and is consequently redefining the typically accepted roles of each medium and genre. Although the areas of interests and methods of studies and expressions are all different among the four artists shown in this exhibition, their unique individualities can come together through the means of art. The four artists share a common aim to demolish the boundaries between photography and art.
매체적 의미로 구분 지어진 사진에 대한 통념, 즉 카메라는 현실의 장면을 포착하여 보여주는 도구이며 이를 통하여 사진이라는 매체가 실재를 보여줄 수 있다는 믿음은 예술작품으로서의 진보를 방해하고 있는 것인지도 모른다. 이번 국제갤러리에서 기획한 Real Reality전에서는 4인의 작가 배병우, 이윤진, 이중근, 권오상 등이 만들어내는 아주 개인적이고 독특한 현실의 모습을 보여주게 된다. 이는 사진이 가지는 여러 방향의 의미들 중에서 과연 우리 눈에 보여지는 것이 실재라고 정의 할 수 있는지, 혹은 그렇지 않다면 현실은 정확하게 무엇을 의미하는지에 대해서 생각할 수 있도록 한다. 또는 순간적으로 포착된 장면에서부터 더듬어낸 기억의 단편으로 보여지는 사진의 장면이 과연 실재와 맞아 떨어질 수 있는 현실이라고 우리는 단정할 수 있는 것인지 고찰 할 수 있는 기회를 가지려 한다.
혼성의 시대의 도래로 인하여 매체와 장르간의 경계는 무너졌고 어떠한 고유의 역할에 대한 도전과 변형, 어울림도 허용되고 있다. 이번 전시에서 선보이는 작가들의 관심분야와 학습 방식과 표현방식이 다름에도 불구하고 이들이 하나의 공통된 의식을 보여 줄 수 있는 것은 지금 시대의 당연한 어울림이다. 그리하여 그들은 사진을 예술이라는 울타리 속으로 융화시키는 공통된 작업을 하고 있다.
