David Nash is one of Britain’s leading sculptors, renowned for his authentic and dynamic transformation of wood and trees. He profoundly explored the language and anatomy of wood all his life, and tells us in his unique way, the diversity which lies within the wood- which symbolizes fuel, life and death, by combining the 21st century’s sensibility into it.
The experience Nash achieved through continuous observation has freed him from the abstract notion that the wood itself is the only main material. He realizes in his work, the active change of the wood while experiencing fire, light, humidity and the dryness and the occurring created through harmonizing with the peripheral environments. His attitudes towards his works are shown through this exhibition in sculptures, drawing and DVD projection. Through these works, we will experience the form and shape, the organic materiality and his attitude towards geometry.
David Nash was born in Surrey, England in 1945 and graduated Kingston College of Art and Chelsea School of Art. He currently lives and works at the foot of a slate tip in the North Wales town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. In 1968 he bought a disused chapel in Blaenau which has been his headquarters ever since. The tip he can see from its windows is composed of unusable slate from the quarries nearby, stacked into horizontal and diagonal lines, an environment which has exerted a subtle influence over the sculptor. Nash comments: ‘My work involves geometric cuts in the natural form of the wood, and I think that these geometrical forms have grown into me while I have lived among the slate tips.’
Nash is known first and foremost for his work with wood. He uses damaged or condemned trees only, and transforms their trunks and limbs into sculptures of rare inventiveness and wit. His is an active engagement with nature, not a distanced re-interpretation, but a hands-on involvement which links the past to the present. Through his work he makes relevant to today the traditions and skills of woodman, charcoal burner, carpenter, hedge-layer, forester and gardener. He harks back to our agricultural heritage in an age dangerously obsessed with technology, and attempts a reconciliation of the spiritual and material. A tree for Nash ‘is like a quarry and I dig out the forms’. It is his ability to discover forms with wide-reaching resonance which makes his work of international significance.


데이비드 내쉬(David Nash)는 평생에 걸쳐 나무의 언어를 연구해 온, 영국을 대표하는 조각가로서 피난처인 동시에 연료이자 삶과 죽음의 상징이기도 한 나무의 다양함을 21세기적 감각을 통해 특유의 방식으로 우리에게 전해준다.
나무에 대한 지속적인 관찰을 통해 얻어진 작가의 경험은 나무 그 자체가 작품의 주재료라는 기존의 관념적인 태도에서 벗어난다. 본 개인전에서 데이비드 내쉬는 열, 빛, 습기와 건조상태에 따라 나무가 변화되는 과정뿐 아니라 주변 환경의 활용이나 적극적인 조화를 통해 나무가 나타내는 변화를 드로잉, 조각, 그리고 영상작업을 통해 보여주며 우리는 이를 통해 나무의 형태와 색, 유기적인 재질, 기하학에 대한 그의 관심을 함께 나눌 수 있을 것이다.
1945년 영국 써리(Surrey)에서 태어난 데이비드 내쉬는 킹스톤 미술대학(Kingston College of Art)과 첼시 미술대학원(Chelsea School of Art)을 졸업했으며 현재 북웨일스(North Wales) 블라이나이 페스티니오그(Blaenau Ffestiniog)의 슬레이트 끝자락에 살고 있다. 1968년 블라이나이의 버려진 예배당을 구입, 현재까지도 그곳에서 작업을 하고 있는 그의 작업실 창문에서는 근처의 채석장에 널려져 있는 독특한 형태의 슬레이트들이 수평으로 또는 대각선의 형태로 쌓여져 있는 것을 볼 수 있는데 이러한 환경은 조각가인 내쉬에게 잠재적인 영향을 미쳤다. 내쉬는 ‘나는 나무의 자연적 형태를 기하학적 형태로 조각한다. 이러한 기하학적 형태에 대한 관심은 내가 슬레이트 무더기 주위에서 살기 때문인 것 같다’라고 말을 하기도 했다.
내쉬는 나무를 이용한 작품으로 명성을 얻고 있다. 그는 피해를 입었거나 구제할 방법이 없을 만큼 손상된 나무만을 작품의 재료로 사용하며 그만의 독특한 창조력과 기지로 이러한 나무의 몸통과 줄기를 조각 작품으로 변화시킨다. 이는 거리를 둔 재해석의 차원이 아니라 작가의 적극적인 참여로 이루어진 자연과의 교류이며 과거의 현재를 잇는 통로이기도 하다. 그는 작품을 통해서 나무꾼, 숯꾼, 목수, 산울타리를 만드는 사람, 산지기와 정원사가 가지는 전통과 기술에 현대적인 의미를 부여한다. 그는 기술에 위험할 정도를 목을 매고 있는 현대의 정신과 물질의 화해를 위해 과거에서의 농업적 자취를 찾으려 한다. 내쉬에게 있어서 나무는 ‘채석장과 같은, 형태를 끄집어 내는’ 장소이다. 작품을 통해 많은 이들이 공감할 수 있는 형태를 발견하고, 국제적인 인지도를 이끌어내는 것은 그야말로 내쉬의 기량인것이다.
