Born 12 May in Krefeld ,Germany
1940
Obtained his Abitur(school degree) in Cleves.
Wants to study medicine ,but is conscripted into the military.
1941
(1941-46) Military service (radio operator,combat pilot) and prisoner of war.
In 1944 he survives a near fatal plane crash in Crimea where he is rescued from the plane wreck by Tartars.
1947
(1947-52)Studies sculpture under Josef Enseling and Ewald Matar'e at the Academy of Arts, Duesseldorf,He is Matare's master pupil until 1954.
1986
Died 23 January 1986 in Duesseldorf ,Germany

The van der Grinten brothers hold his first one-man show in their house in Kranenberg ,Cleves ,which is then shown at the Von der Heydt-Museum,Wuppertal
1954
(1954-59) Studio in Duesseldorf.After phases of depressiv exhaustion from which he recovers by working as a farm hand on the van der Grinten farm, he opens a studio in Cleves. Marries Eva Wurmbrand in 1959.
1961
Exhibition at the Museum Haus Koekkoek in Cleves with the first publication on Beuys.
Appointed as Professor of monumental sculpture at the Academy in Duesseldorf and takes a studio and apartment there.
