The renowned French contemporary artist Jean-Michel Othoniel first began to incorporate glass into his practice in the early 1990s after encountering artisan glassblowers from Italy, and has been employing glass as his primary medium since 1992. Precious Stonewall, an organic work of glass bricks shimmering with vitality in tones of blue, is the result of the artist’s relentless experimentation and collaboration with glass artisans from India. Othoniel’s Precious Stonewall series symbolizes the desires and hopes for life, inspired by the artist’s understanding of bricks being a ubiquitous material for construction, as well as a significant component of art and architecture history. This particular work in Mediterranean blue reflects its surroundings like a mirror, evoking a sense of enigma.
프랑스를 대표하는 현대미술가 장-미셸 오토니엘은 1990년대 초 이탈리아에서 유리 가공 기술을 접한 이후, 1992년부터 본격적으로 유리를 주요 매체로 작업해오고 있다. 유기적이며 생명력 넘치는 작품으로 잘 알려진 작가의 오랜 재료 탐구의 결과이기도 한 <Precious Stonewall>은 인도 유리 장인들과의 협업으로 제작한 푸른색 유리벽돌 작품이다. 작가는 벽돌이 어떤 문화권에서나 대중적으로 활용되는 재료이자 건축사, 미술사의 일부라는 사실에 주목하며, 삶의 염원과 희망을 상징하는 벽돌 작품을 선보이고 있다. 아주 오래 전, 지중해에서 온 특유의 푸른빛은 거울처럼 주변 환경을 반사시키는 동시에 신비로운 느낌을 자아낸다.
