The American conceptual artist Jenny Holzer employs language as her primary medium. Using incisive and poetic texts, Holzer engages with pressing issues and social injustices. The artist’s iconic sentences, along with those she selects from other sources, confront and disarm viewers, creating public spaces that are both stark and emotional. personal dignity (2018) presents a heavily redacted CIA memo on the repercussions of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the Guantanamo tribunals violated the Geneva Conventions. This memo was made available to the public through the Freedom of Information Act. While the majority of the text is censored, the first line reads: “provisions of Common Article 3 prohibiting ‘outrages upon personal dignity’ and ‘violence to life and person.’”
미국 작가 제니 홀저는 언어를 가장 주요한 매개체로 삼아 작업하는데, 다양한 원전의 문구를 여러 매체로 전달하며 역사 및 정치적 불의를 고찰한다. 이때 작가의 목소리를 빌어 소개되는 글귀는 보는 이로 하여금 사회의 당대적 현안을 정면으로 직시하게 함으로써 냉정하고도 감정적인 공공의 장(場)을 구축해낸다. 2018년에 제작된 회화 작품 <personal dignity>에는 관타나모 기지에서의 군사재판이 제네바 협정에 위배되는 것이라는 미국 연방 대법원 판결의 파급효과를 논하는 CIA 문서가 소개된다. 이 역시 미국의 정보자유법(Freedom of Information Act)에 따라 대중에게 공개된 문건이다. 대부분의 텍스트가 검열 하에 지워진 모양새지만, 첫 줄에서만큼은 “‘인간 존엄성에 대한 침해’와 ‘생명의 위협 및 개인에 대한 폭력’을 금지하는 공통 3조의 조항”을 명시한다.
