국제갤러리는 현존하는 영국의 대표적인 조각가 데이비드 내쉬(David Nash, b.1945)의 개인전을 개최한다. K2에서 열리는 본 전시는 조각과 드로잉으로 구성되어 있으며 2007년 국제갤러리 전시 이후 국내에서 갖는 두 번째 전시이다.
데이비드 내쉬는 자연에 대한 윤리적 접근 태도와 야생에서 발견된 나무들에 정교한 형태를 부여한 심미적인 오브제 작업들로 잘 알려져 있다. 야생 상태 그대로의 거친 표면을 활용한 내쉬의 서정적인 조각의 진가를 제대로 감상하기 위해서는 그가 나무를 바라보는 관점과 환경론적 관점이 작업에서 어떤 역할을 갖는지를 이해하는 것이 핵심이다. 작업 초기부터 그는 기후나 질병에 의해 자연스럽게 쓰러진 나무만을 사용함으로써 자신이 선택한 재료와의 조화를 추구하는 작품을 제작해왔다. 나무를 하나의 유기적 재료로 대하는 그의 태도는 나무의 형태를 다루는 예리한 감수성과 나무의 본래 형태에 깃든 자연적 요소들로 정의될 수 있다. 또한 다음과 같은 언급은 작가가 지닌 작업 윤리를 짐작할 수 있게 한다. “나무의 수명주기는 인간의 수명주기를 닮았다. 그들은 밤낮으로 성장하고 호흡하며, 계절에 따라 깨어있거나 잠을 잔다. 나무는 자신의 형태를 통해 시간에 대한 이야기를 드러낸다.”

이번 국제갤러리 전시에서 내쉬는 크기, 균형 및 형식적 정교함과 표면처리에 관한 그의 고유한 접근 방식을 통해 평면과 입체를 탁월하게 아우르는 작품들을 소개한다. 또한 작가가 대표적으로 사용해온 나무 외에도 브론즈 신작들과 종이 작업들도 함께 선보인다. 내쉬의 조각 작업이 지닌 주요한 특성들 중 하나는 나무 표면의 드라마틱한 절개방식인데, 이러한 제스츄어는 인위적인 패턴과 시간이 남긴 표면의 흐름을 환기시킨다. 표면을 그을리기 위해 불을 사용하는 것과 더불어 그는 형태와 외면 처리를 성공적으로 통합시킴으로써 인간의 손을 거쳤으나 자연스러움을 간직한 작업을 만들어낸다. 시간에 따른 재료의 변화에 관한 내쉬의 작가적 관심은 그로 하여금 형태를 만드는 자연의 변형적 힘과 여러 모로 유사한 액체 금속을 사용한 제작 과정, 즉 주조된 브론즈 작업들로 이어진다. “토르소(Torso)”나 “짙은 붉은 기둥(Deep Red Column)” 같은 작품들은 대형 조각임에도 불구하고 감각적 특질과 표면의 탁월함을 유지하고 있다. 또한, 작가는 “코르크 돔(Cork Dome)”과 “붉고 어두운 돔(Red and Black Dome)” 작업을 통해 개별 조각들을 그룹으로 모으는 전략을 발전시켰다. 그는 이들이 관계성을 갖도록 배열함으로써 형태에 생동감을 불어넣고 오브제와 제작자 사이의 깊은 관계를 반영하여 뚜렷한 정체성을 확립하였다. 다양한 재료로 제작된 30여 점의 조각 작품 외에도 내쉬는 두 종류의 종이 작업들을 선보인다. 불에 그을린 나무 액자에 붉은색, 푸른색의 밀도 있는 안료를 덧입힌 종이작업은 세 점의 삼면화로 구성되었고, 참나무를 그린 일련의 종이작업에서는 참나무의 자연스러운 형태를 포착할 뿐 아니라 이를 재료로 사용한 조각 드로잉들을 보여준다.

데이비드 내쉬는 1963년부터 1967년까지 킹스턴 예술 대학에서 수학하였고 1969년부터 1970년까지 첼시 예술 대학에서 대학원 과정을 마쳤다. 1973년에 열린 첫 개인전 이후 영국 및 해외에서 다수의 개인전을 가졌으며 2010년 영국 요크셔 조각공원(2010), 큐 왕립식물원(2012-13)과 프랑스 샤또 쇼몽 쉬르 루아르(2013)에서 개인전을 가진 바 있다. 그의 작품은 런던 테이트 갤러리, 빅토리아 앤 알버트 미술관과 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 미술관, 구겐하임 미술관, 오털로 크롤러-뮐러 미술관, 과천 국립현대미술관과 도쿄 현대미술관을 포함한 전 세계 유수의 컬렉션에 소장되어 있다. 1999년 왕립 학술의원으로 선출된 내쉬는 같은 해 뉴캐슬에 있는 노섬브리아 대학의 연구원으로 임명, 런던 킹스턴 예술 대학에서는 명예박사 학위를 수여 받았다. 2004년에는 예술계에 대한 공로를 인정받아 대영제국 4등 훈장을 수훈하였다. 현재 내쉬는 영국 북웨일즈에 거주하며 작업 중이다.

Kukje Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of David Nash(British, b.1945), a major exhibition of both sculpture and works on paper by one of the 21st century’s most respected and beloved sculptors. His current exhibition in K2 follows his previous solo show at Kukje in 2007.
David Nash is widely celebrated for his ethical approach to nature and the exquisitely beautiful objects he shapes from wood found in the wild. To fully appreciate the rough-hewn and lyrical sculptures wrought by Nash, it is essential to understand how the artist views trees and the role of ecology in his practice. Since the beginning of his prolific career, Nash has been committed to making artworks in concert with his chosen material, using only trees that have fallen naturally due to weather or disease. This relationship to wood as a living medium is defined by his keen sensitivity to the tree’s morphology and by natural elements in their original form. This philosophy is captured in his observation that, “Trees have a life cycle resembling our own. They grow and breathe through day and night and are awake and asleep in turn through the seasons. Trees show their time-story through their form.”

For his exhibition at Kukje Gallery, Nash presents works that showcase his mastery of both two and three dimensions, employing scale, balance, and formal ingenuity as well as his signature approaches to surface patina. In addition to wood, the exhibition includes major new works in bronze as well as works on paper. One of the most immediately recognizable aspects of Nash’s sculpture is his use of dramatic cuts on the surface of the wood, a gestural vocabulary that evokes both man-made pattern and the ineffable face of time. Coupled with the use of flame to char the surfaces, Nash integrates form and surface treatments to create works that feel natural despite their having been shaped by man. Nash’s interest in how material evolves over time has led him to major new works completed in cast bronze, a liquid metal process that in some ways mimics the transformative power of nature to shape form. Whilst massive, works such as Torso and Deep Red Column maintain the sensuousness and surface quality of the wood. In addition, the artist has developed strategies of grouping individual pieces as seen in works such as Cork Dome and Red and Black Dome. By arranging them in concert with one another he is further able to animate his form, giving them palpable identities that reflect the profound relationship between object and maker. In addition to nearly thirty sculptures in various media, Nash will show two distinct bodies of work on paper. In the first, he has created three triptychs in both red and blue consisting of dense layers of pigment on paper framed in charred wood. In the other suite of drawings, Nash has depicted cork oaks, capturing both their natural forms as well as alluding to his sculptures made from the same species of tree.
David Nash studied at Kingston College of Art from 1963 to 1967 and at Chelsea School of Art for postgraduate studies from 1969 to 1970. His first solo exhibitions in 1973 rapidly led to a series of solo exhibitions throughout the UK and abroad. His most recent solo exhibitions have been held at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 2010, Kew Royal Botanical Gardens, London in 2012-13 and Château Chaumont-sur-Loire, France in 2013. Nash’s works can be found in many significant collections around the world, including Tate Gallery, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller, Otterlo; National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul and Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. In 1999, Nash was elected a Royal Academician, appointed as a Research Fellow at the University of Northumbria, Newcastle, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Art & Design by Kingston University. In 2004, Nash was awarded an Order of the British Empire for services to the arts. He lives and works in North Wales.
