전시 개요
국제갤러리는 한국 사진을 새롭게 변화시킨 장본인으로 평가 받는 구본창 작가의 개인전을 개최한다. 1980년 초에 독일 유학을 했던 작가는 귀국 후, 보도사진이나 살롱풍의 사진이 주류를 이루었던 이전까지의 한국 사진 문화와 다른 예술로서의 사진 작품을 선보여, 국내 화단에 사진에 대한 인식의 변화를 가져왔다.
이번 전시에서는 이전까지 작가가 작업의 결과물로서인 사진 작품을 전시하는 것과는 달리, 그러한 결과물이 나온 과정에 초점을 맞춘다. 작가는 많은 사람들의 다양한 컬렉션들을 촬영하는 동시에 본인 스스로도 여러 오브제들을 수집해왔다. 국제갤러리 신관에서 개최되는 이번 전시에서는 이러한 오브제들을 사진작품과 함께 전시하면서, 단순히 결과물로서의 사진이 아니라 작업의 시작과 그 결과물을 함께 보여주면서 보다 더 깊은 소통의 기회를 마련코자 한다. 또한 작가의 수집품들을 보여줌으로써 이미지 컬렉터로서의 작가 성향에 주목한다.
2006년 국제 갤러리에서의 개인전 이후 5년 만에 다시 개최되는 이번 전시에서는 작가의 수집품을 비롯해 미발표작 이었던 80년대 국내외에서 길거리 촬영 스타일로 작업한 사진과 다른 소장가들의 수집 작품을 촬영한 신작도 소개될 예정이다. 2009년 촬영한 프랑스 기메 미술관에서 소장하고 있는 한국 탈을 찍은 마스크 시리즈, 계속해서 작업을 이어오고 있는 곱돌 시리즈, 백자 시리즈 중 2010년 촬영한 이타미준의 백자 컬렉션 등의 사진 작품을 포함한다.

Exhibition Introduction
Kukje Gallery is very pleased to present the solo exhibition of Bohnchang Koo, his second at the Gallery. Widely heralded as a leader in the development of modern Korean photography, Koo returned to Korea after studying in Germany in the early 1980s. Rejecting the documentary style then in vogue, Koo focused on composing and exhibiting fine art photography thereby establishing himself as a hugely influential member of the burgeoning contemporary art community.
Well-known for beautifully composed and meticulous prints, this exhibition seeks to highlight both his finished works in addition to the process behind his photographic practice. Recent works feature archeological and cultural treasures that the artist reframes through his photographs. This exhibition will also showcase some of Koo’s own objects, memorabilia and curios he has collected from all around the world as a tireless collector. This unique exhibition will contextualize the artist not only as a photographer but as a cultural anthropologist and a collector in his own right.
The exhibition will feature a broad range of the artist’s oeuvre including early street photography from the 1980s taken in Korea and abroad as well as new photographic compositions that document the artist’s various collections. New work on display will include the Masks and Vessels series that includes the photographs of Joseon period masks from the Musée Guimet, Paris (2009), 19th century stone works from The Japan Folk Arts Museum, Tokyo (2007) and Moon Jars from Itami Jun’s collection in Tokyo (2010).
