INTRODUCTION

For over thirty years, German artist Candida Hofer (b. 1944) has been photographing the interior of public or semipublic places like libraries, museums, theaters and historic houses and palaces. The places that are portrayed in her photographs are centers of cultural life, often offering glimpses of cities across the world and reflecting the architecture of different time periods.
Among the unique aspects of Candida Hofer’s work is the fact that typically the people who would inhabit these spaces are absent, thus enabling us to discover in the spaces what she describes as an “almost magical presence of things.” The artist places herself in the position of the spectator, which is also that of the user. In looking at her photographs one is led to perceive and identify the existence of composition and arrangements which existed before the presence of people and which the artist does not alter. Her photographs are taken from a classic straight-on frontal angle or seek a diagonal in the composition, succeeding in giving us the sensation of a space which is open both to our eyes and our prospective presence. Precisely by being reserved with her camera, she lets the forms begin to speak for themselves.
Candida Hofer is the senior member of the Becher circle to study at the Dusseldorf Academy under the tutelage of renowned professor Bernd Becher in the 1970s and 1980s. She has participated in the Documenta 11 and represented Germany in the Venice Biennale 2003.
