전시 소개
국제갤러리는 오는 8월 29일부터 10월 10일까지 ‘바늘여인’, ‘보따리’, ‘천, 지, 인’의 관계의 탐구로 널리 알려진 작가 김수자 (b.1957)의 개인전을 개최한다. 작가의 작품 세계는 시각적인 이미지 및 오브제를 넘어 정신적이고 철학적인 탐구를 통해 다양한 문화와 삶의 인류학적 면모를 보여준다.
이번 개인전은 작가의 주요한 작품 주제들을 아우르는 전시로서, 갤러리 3관과 2관 전관에 설치되는 대규모의 영상 전시는 작가의 신작이자 첫 16mm 6부작 다큐멘터리 필름 <실의 궤적 Thread Routes> 중 chapter 1,2 를 포함 4채널 비디오 설치작품 <뭄바이: 빨래터 Mumbai: A Laundry Field>, 그리고 <숨쉬기: 보이지 않는 거울 / 보이지 않는 바늘 To Breathe: Invisible Mirror / Invisible Needle> 등 총 10 여 채널에 달하는 작품들을 통해 작가만의 영상 세계를 집중적으로 조망한다.
김수자는 이번 전시를 통해 시공간의 축적이 담긴 장소특정적인 삶과 문화 그리고 역사적인 흐름을 관통하는 작업 세계를 보여줄 예정이다. 동양적 또는 한국적이라 불리는 서구의 근대적인 관점에서 간과한 가치들을 선험적인 태도로서 접근한 이번 국제갤러리의 김수자의 첫 개인전은, 최근 10여 년에 걸친 최근 작업들로써, 그녀만의 고유한 유목적이고 관조적인 관점, 그리고 초기 작업부터 지속적으로 확대되고 심화되어 온 페인팅과 드로잉의 개념들, 아울러 그것의 휴머니즘적 연관성을 경험 할 수 있는 소중한 기회가 될 것이다.
현재 뉴욕, 파리, 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 김수자는 1957년 대구에서 태어나 이후 홍익대학교와 동 대학원에서 회화를 전공하였다. 김수자의 주요 개인전으로는 2010년 국립현대미술관 주최의 영광 원자력 발전소 아트 프로젝트와 2009년 서울 아틀리에 에르메스의 <지-수-화-풍>, 2006년 마드리드 레이나 소피아미술관이 주최한 크리스탈 팔라스에서의 <호흡: 거울여인>, 2005년 베니스 라 페니체 극장에서의 <호흡:보이지 않는 거울,보이지 않는 바늘>, 2003년-2004년의 리옹 현대미술관, 미라노 현대미술관(PAG), 뒤셀도르프의 쿤스트 뮤지움 팔라스트에서의 유럽 순회 개인전 <인간의 조건>, 2001년 PS1 현대미술센터와 MoMA 의 <바늘 여인> 등에 참여하였다. 그룹 전시로는 베니스의 <아르템포 Artempo>, <인-피니툼 In-Finitum>, <움직이는 도시 Cities on the Move> 순회전 뿐만 아니라 포츠난, 모스크바, 베니스, 발렌시아, 리옹, 상파울로, 이스탄불, 휘트니 비엔날레, 부산과 광주 비엔날레 등이 있다. 대표적인 소장내역으로는 휘트니미술관, 리움 삼성 미술관, 국립현대미술관, 스위스의 쿤스트 베른, 리옹 현대미술관, 도쿄현대미술관, 후쿠오카미술관, 빌&메린다 게이츠 파운데이션, 그리고 런던의 몬순컬렉션 외 다수가 있다.


Kukje Gallery is pleased to present ‘To Breathe,’ a solo exhibition of new works by Kimsooja (b.1957) on view from August 29 through October 10. Kimsooja is an internationally acclaimed artist well known for investigating metaphysical themes of consciousness and social identity through her recurring subjects of the ‘needle woman’ and ‘bottari.’ The artist’s work transcends formal imagery to reveal diverse cultural and anthropological aspects of everyday life - framed by her inquiry into spiritual and philosophical values and the importance of place. The exhibition is comprised of ten video works, including the first two chapters (Chapter 1 & 2) from her recently completed 16mm six-part documentary film Thread Routes in addition to the four channel video installation Mumbai: A Laundry Field, and To Breathe: Invisible Mirror / Invisible Needle.
Throughout her work Kimsooja explores themes of geography and how culture is shaped by its regional context in ways both explicit and subtle. The multipart works weave together the different strands of disparate and foreign cultures portraying the world as an integrated, albeit complex whole. In addition, the exhibition confronts aesthetic distinctions that have often been overlooked and oversimplified by the West - having been labeled as being ‘Eastern’ or ‘Korean’. This comprehensive exhibition of the artist’s work presents an exciting opportunity to view projects spanning over a decade and to see how the artist’s background in painting and drawing have evolved in her most recent multi-media works. ‘To Breathe’ provides an invaluable opportunity to see the stunning breadth of one of Korea’s most critically acclaimed contemporary artists.
Currently based in New York, Paris and Seoul, Kimsooja was born in 1957 in Daegu, Korea. She received a B.A. and M.A. in painting from Hongik University. Kimsooja’s major solo exhibitions include an art project at the National Museum of Contemporary Art Korea for the Yong Gwang Nuclear Power Plant; Earth - Water - Fire - Air at Atelier Hermes, Seoul; To Breathe: A Mirror Woman at the Crystal Palace, commissioned by Museo de National Reina Sofia, Madrid; To Breathe / Respirare at La Fenice Theater, Venice; and Conditions of Humanity, a solo show at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Lyon, that travelled to PAC, Milan; Museum Kunst Palast, Düsseldorf; and A Needle Woman at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and MoMA , New York. Group exhibitions include Artempo and In-Finitum, Venice; and Cities on the Move which was a traveling exhibition curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Hou Hanru. She has participated in biennales in Poznan, Moscow, Venice, Valencia, Lyon, Sao Paolo, Istanbul, Busan, Gwangju and the Whitney Biennial. Kimsooja’s work can be found in major international museums and private collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Leeum Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul; National Museum of Contemporary Art Korea, Gwacheon; Kunstmuseum Bern; Museum of Contemporary Art, Lyon; Fukuoka Art Museum; Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle; and Monsoon Collection, London.
